👋 Hey—it’s Jared!

I’ve been wearing a toupee for 6 months now, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

If you’re considering a hair system or toupee, you probably have questions. Like, real ones. So let’s tackle the top 3 things I wish someone had told me when I first glued hair on my head.

1. Can you shower or swim with a toupee?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: You’ll need the right adhesive.

Modern men’s hair systems are designed to hold up in water—whether you’re hitting the gym, shower, or even swimming. Use a waterproof adhesive like Ghost Bond Platinum or Walker Tape Ultra Hold and you’re good.

Speaking of showering, what I’ve found that works best is to only shampoo once per week, max.

I know I know, gross right? No.

Remember, your toupee hair is no longer attached to your scalp. This also means it is not exposed to your skin oils and therefore DOES NOT need to be shampooed every day.

That doesn’t mean you can’t get it wet everyday, but avoid over shampooing. It will dry out your system and add to unnecessary wear and tear.

2. How long does toupee glue last?

Answer: Up to 4 weeks—but most guys do maintenance sooner.

Adhesive hold depends on factors like sweat, climate, and your daily routine. Some guys stretch it to a month, others (like me) find that a 14 day refresh keeps things clean and secure.

There’s also “daily wear” options that use adhesives that aren’t quite as strong, which allows you to remove the hair system every night. This extends the life of your system, but it does require you to place it back on each morning.

Using quality products and proper scalp prep helps extend longevity.

3. Will people know I’m wearing a hair system?

Only if you point it out.

A well-installed, natural-looking hair system is virtually undetectable. Most people are more focused on their phones than your hairline. Confidence (and decent blending) goes a long way.

If you’re interested, here’s a quick YouTube video I did about how I handled my first day at work after getting my toupee installed.

Think about it this way— before you even considered a toupee or hair system, when was the last time you were walking down the street and thought, “that guy is totally wearing a toupee”?

Probably never. And I promise you, there are a lot more system wearers out there than you would think!

Bonus Tip:

I know said 3 tips—but I lied.

There’s one other question I get asked more often than the amount I get carded, post-toupee:

Does wearing a toupee itch?! It can, but it gets WAY better.

Like anything, it’s always the “worst” before it get’s better. For the first week or two, your scalp is getting used to the new roommate on your head.

After that first two weeks, your scalp should be so used to it that you won’t even feel it on your head. For the occasional itch, it’s best to “tap” the spot to avoid damaging the base of the system.

Bottom line: Hair systems aren’t just for the brave—they’re for the informed. And you’re now officially informed.

Next week’s topic: What to expect on your first install day—from nerves to new hairlines.
